Just a quick note to let you know that we are sold out of our Golden Supreme, Red Delicious, and most of our Ida Red.

We still have Golden Delicious #1's and #2's available.  We have a few #1 Ida Reds still available.

It won't be too long before Yorks, Braeburns, and Fujis are ripe.

Happy Fall!

Heifer Calf

Meet our new calf!  She is 8 days old today.  Isn't she adorable?!  We haven't named her yet.  She is very spunky and loves to run around. We were suprised to see her out in the field; we weren't expecting her to come quite yet.  She is healthy and has already grown a bunch in only a week!

Looking for something to do this Saturday or Sunday?  The National Apple Harvest Festival is held at the South Mountain Fairgrounds just outside of Arendtsville.  The fairgrounds are just a little over 3 miles away from our farm.  Katrina and I love attending this festival to go Christmas shopping and to consume all sorts of delicious foods made with apples! They have everything including crafts, food, antique cars, antique engines, live music, hay rides, and a petting zoo.  It is a huge event and is attended by people from all over the United States.  The festival is also held next weekend.

The website for the festival is http://www.appleharvest.com/

Have a great weekend!

Fresh Apple Cider

We picked the apples on Friday, mixed the different varieties together on Saturday, and got cider pressed from those same apples this morning.  It doesn't get much fresher than that!

Jacob and I taste tested the cider when it was only minutes old.  It is quite tasty.  You should try some of our delicious cider, made only with our 100% certified organic apples.

Golden Delicious     Red Delicious

We picked a few Golden Delicious and Red Delicious apples, however we are going to start picking Golden Delicious full force on Monday, September 20th.  We will be picking Red Delicious later in the week.

Please let us know if you would like Golden Delicious or Red Delicious for pick-up on Friday, September 24th, or Saturday, September 25th.  You may call at 717-677-8411 or email us at wjoyler@superpa.net.

We will be at the Carlisle farmer's market again this week, so you may come visit us there.  We are going to get cider pressed on Monday, so we will have some for sale at the farmer's market this week.

For those of you who like our Ida Red, get ready because we will be picking them before you know it!

Golden Delicious

We wrapped up the Golden Supreme season and are moving toward picking our Golden Delicious and Red Delicious. I took a walk in one of our orchards this morning and took some pictures of an almost ripe Golden Delicious (see above) as well as Ida Red and York apples.  (I wasn't over to our other orchard with the Red Delicious to take a picture of them...but they are almost ripe too!)  You can definitely tell that the Ida Red are getting bigger and riper if you compare the picture I took this morning to the picture I took back at the beginning of July.

We are sold out of our Golden Supreme apples. We will most likely start picking our Golden Delicious on September 20th.  We are waiting for them to get a little riper so that they are extra good!  I will make an effort to post a blog when we start picking the Golden Delicious.  Things got very busy and the Golden Supreme were all sold before I got a blog posted that they were available for sale!

The cattle are getting more and more tame as we continue to work with them on a daily basis.  They are enjoying the cool weather that we have been having.  I am enjoying the cool weather too!

You may be wondering why I haven't blogged in awhile...we have been quite busy lately!

We harvested our Golden Supreme apples...and we are sold out already!  We did save a few for attending the Farmer's on the Square farmer's market in Carlisle this Wednesday, September 8th.  If you are still hoping to try some of these tasty apples, come visit us at the farmer's market!

Our next variety to ripen is Golden Delicious.  Since everything is maturing early this year, we are going to go check them this afternoon.  If you would like to receive updates on what we have for sale, please sign up for our mailing list. Check out our Apple Varieties list to see what varieties we grow and their approximate ripening dates.

The cooler weather which arrived today has me smacking my lips in anticipation of some fresh apple cider.  We are planning to get cider pressed the third full week of September.  I love fresh cider!

Clouds after the storm

(Clouds after last night's storm...aren't they pretty?)

The end of last week turned out to be a pleasant surprise with 2 1/2 inches of rain and cooler, cloudy weather.  Another storm system came through last night and we received another 1/4 inch of rain.  I stopped by the grocery store and the cashier was complaining about the rain.  I told him that I was happy that we were getting rain...every plant on our farm needed water badly!

When I was out in the orchard on Friday I picked a Golden Supreme apple.  It was yummy!  I am officially excited for fall and apple season.  Generally we do not pick Golden Supreme until the last few days of August or first days of September.  With the hot, dry weather we experienced, will most likely be picking these flavorful apples very soon.  When looking at the Golden Supreme, we are seeing more #2's than #1's.  This variety is very good fresh, but also makes a scrumptious sauce.  In fact, Katrina already found just enough ripe ones to make a batch of sauce.

Our family is looking forward to seeing you again this fall and supplying you with our local, organic apples!

Jacob & Liz Oyler

Meet Jacob & Elizabeth (Liz) Oyler!  They were married on July 31st, 2010.  We were busy getting ready for the wedding last week. They had a lovely wedding and reception.  The weather was perfect.  We are excited to welcome Liz into our family!

This week, we were catching up on farm work and the organic inspector came.  We are inspected every year in order to keep our USDA organic certification.  The inspector documents everything on the farm and then reports his/her findings to the certifier (which in our case is Pennsylvania Certified Organic).  PCO then reviews the findings and reports back to us.
