Mmm baleage

Mmm baleage!  This calf is chomping down on a mouthful of our baleage.  We do not feed our cattle any grain.  When the grass is growing during the spring, summer, and early fall we cut some of it with our disc bine.  We then let it dry some, but not completely, and then bale it into big round bales with our baler.  A third person follows the baler, scoops up the fresh made bales and wraps them to keep the air out.  The partially wet grass inside then ferments and makes baleage!  The cattle LOVE it and it's good for them.

The cattle grew their winter coats and look like cute furry critters out in the pasture.  They are all wooly and are quite warm despite the colder weather.  When it snows, the snow doesn't even melt on them because they are so well insulated.  Since they gradually became acclimated to the weather as it got colder, they do not need to be inside and enjoy being outside.

Happy January!

Looking for something to do?  How about a trip to Harrisburg for the PA Farm Show?  Every year as kids we looked forward to attending the Farm Show.  It is always fun to see all of the animals, watch chicks hatch, and check out so many different things!  For example, the Shaver's Creek Environmental Center exhibit is always entertaining to children.  The big, new tractors are always impressive.  The rodeo is fun to watch too.  Cooking demonstrations are great to watch when you are tired of walking.

Parking is $10.00 and admission is FREE!

Happy New Year!

We'll have fresh cider again tomorrow, Tuesday December 20th.  The cider is $4.50 per half gallon and $8.00 per gallon.  The cider is especially good this time of year warm with a cinnamon stick.  The cider makes a great gift when visiting over the holidays!

Let us know if you would like cider.  717-677-8411 or wjoyler@superpa.net

This will be the last cider that we have available until the middle of January.

We'll have cider at the Carlisle farmer's market on Wednesday also, which is at the Depot on the Dickinson College campus.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

calf

Guess what dad and mom found when they went to check on the cattle after Hurricane Irene went through?  Twins!  Baby Harry ("Harry"cane) and Baby Irene are fragile little calves but are becoming more spunky.  Irene is in the picture you see above.

We've been busy using our discbine to mow down some forage into windrows.  We made baleage (aka marshmallows you see in the field) yesterday to have feed for our cattle during the winter.

We started apple season and are picking our first variety, Golden Supreme.  They are mighty tasty!  We will have them for sale at the Farmers on the Square farmer's market this coming Wednesday, September 7th in Carlisle.  We will have them for sale at our farm beginning Friday and Saturday, September 9th and 10th.  We will be sending out more details to our email list so be sure to sign up if you haven't already in order to receive updates!

Did you feel the earthquake tremors?  We did in Adams County!  We never thought we would have that experience right on our farm!
